When it comes to ancient camping, nomadic people living on the steppe and soldiers marching to battle have the most say.

Similar to modern people who like to camp on grass, nomads often "live by water and grass". Nomads have no permanent homes, and their lives are constantly connected with Mongolian Yurts. The famous Yuefu poem "Chile Song" praises the magnificent and vast scenery of the grassland: "Chile River, under the cloudy mountains, the sky is like a domed cottage, the cage covers the four fields. The sky is grey, the wild is boundless, and the wind blows the grass low to see cattle and sheep." The word "dome" refers to a tent used by nomads.
In addition to the "domes", the nomads' tents are also called "felt tents". The Western Han Dynasty adopted the strategy of making peace and sending Emperor Zhaojun out of the West. In the imagination of later generations, Zhaojun lived in a felt tent after reaching the wall. Tang Dynasty poet Dai Shulun "Zhaojun Ci" a poem said: "the Han palace is dreaming, several degrees of yurt tears wet clothes." The word yurt refers to the tent where the emperor lives.

The nomads' use of tents also influenced the people of the Central Plains. In the flourishing Tang Dynasty, Hu and Han cultures were further integrated. Tents became popular in Central China. Among the many tent users is the familiar poet Bai Juyi. In the third year of Emperor Wenzong Taihe (829), Bai Juyi resigned his post as a squire in the punishment Department due to illness and moved from Chang 'an to Luoyang. Although Bai Juyi owned a mansion in Luoyang, he only loved to entertain and feast in a felt tent. Bai Juyi also wrote poems about his experiences in the yurt. These poems became an important channel for later generations to understand the form of felt tent and the life of literati in Tang Dynasty. For example, "Twenty Charms of Green Felt Tent" writes:

It has a top and a center, and it is round without corners.
Partong door Huoer, inside the temperature is still.
Far away from Guan Shan, before the beginning of an court.
Shadow lone moon night, price heavy bitter cold years.
...
